What a Nice Surprise!

I planted Japanese persimmon three years ago. It is flowering now for the first time. I counted 14 flowers so, it is supposed to be 14 kaki apples as we call it here in Croatia. I am really looking forward to picking them up. I just love the taste.

Trellis

I have finished the trellis today and mounted them in the cucumber bed. For a long time, I wanted to make the trellis of hazel twigs. This year I finally collected enough twigs and poles to make one. I don't mind the twigs being not ideally straight. I love the natural, handcrafted look in the garden.
I pre-sowed the cucumbers in the posts some three weeks ago and transplanted them into the vegetable garden. I put the straw mulch around them hoping it will prevent slugs crawling to the seedlings. I spread some slug pellets around as well.

When the sun warms up the ground, it doesn't take long for the seeds to germinate. These are climbing beans. One of them is 'Marvel of Venice'. The names of the other cultivars are unknown to me because I got the seeds from my friends. And they have no idea which they are.

'Hokkaido' pumpkins

The gourds, pumpkins, and squashes germinated very well this year. I planted them into beds but, I have no place for all of them. I will give a few pots to my neighbor.

Nursery Check-out

Once emerged from the ground, the seedlings grow pretty fast. The weather is pretty warm, and that has certainly encouraged their growth.

Gourds and pumpkins are ready to be planted in the place they will grow. I have already re-planted zucchini and 'Hokkaido' pumpkins in the vegetable garden.

These are cucumbers. I have three cultivars of cucumbers, 'Market More', 'Cornichon De Paris' and 'Sunny Creek'. The bed for them is already prepared. I only have to make the support. I think I am going to make some twig trellis.

The peony 'Pink Hawaiian Coral' is about to open. The colour is really amazing.

The Ornamental Cherry

My ornamental cherry 'Royal Burgundy' is a young, small tree. Still, it looks beautiful full of clusters of double pink flowers.

I bought this particular cultivar because of the red foliage. When the flowers fade, the red crown add interest among other mostly green plants.

Sunday Rest

We had some rain over the weekend which was good for the garden. I have done all the gardening jobs for the week and am enjoying some rest on Sunday.
The twig supports for peonies I made a few weeks ago are functioning very well. The stems are growing through and are slowly covering the frame. Some of them are almost completely invisible.

These are the very first flowers of Clematis montana I planted last year. It reached about 1,8 m in height and spread about 60 cm. I hope it will cover the terrace fence eventually. This type of Clematis needs no pruning, only tidying up when too entangled and messy.

The red currant sets the first fruits. I have noticed blisters on some leaves which are caused by red currant blister aphid. Some leaves turn red too. These aphids don't seem to have any effect on plant growth or cropping ability but do look unsightly. So far, there is only a few diseased leaves on each bush and I will simply cut them off.
